Education Economic Development
Mount Hope’s aim is to provide opportunities to our community residents, be they children, adolescents or adults, to assist them to become self-sufficient, economically stable, productive citizens. By acquiring English language proficiency, attaining educational goals, developing career readiness, social and personal skills, our program participants can set a positive course for themselves and gain the confidence to realize their goals.
How We Do It
Our programs are designed to assist community residents acquire proficiency in specific areas so that move forward towards achieve their goals. Our current program offerings include:
High School Equivalency Diploma: Target Population – Adolescents
In collaboration with the Pathways to Graduation Program, a division of the NYC Department of Education (DOE), we offer older adolescents that have dropped out of high school a second chance to get their lives back on track. Students, ages 18-21, attend classes Mondays-Fridays, from 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM, receive classroom instruction by NYS licensed teachers in preparation to take the equivalency exam and acquire their high school diplomas. After graduating from the program, over 50% of our program graduates move on to college and 40% enter the workforce.
English as a Second Language (ESL): Target Population – Adults
In collaboration with the Workers’ Consortium (NY Communities for Change) we offer ESL classes to adults, from any country of origin, so that they can raise their language proficiency in English. Classes meet Mondays-Thursdays, from 6:30 PM- 9:00 PM. Students are placed in class according to their language skills at the time of enrollment and have the opportunity to move on to higher levels of instruction as their language proficiency increases.
Free Tax Preparation: Target Population – Adults
The Mount Hope Housing Company, during the months of January-April, provides free tax preparation to community residents. Our trained staff members are certified by the IRS, tax returns are submitted electronically (via e-mail) and individuals are provide copies of the tax returns for their records. The program operates during the evenings and on weekends, for the convenience of our community residents.
